Sakai Hōitsu

Japanese Rinpa Painter

Sakai Hōitsu, born on August 1, 1761, in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan, and died on January 4, 1829, was a Japanese painter and poet of the late Tokugawa period. Hōitsu is known for reviving the decorative style of Ogata Kōrin and creating reproductions of Kōrin's work. His masterpiece, the screen painting 'Summer and Autumn Grasses,' showcases his ability to capture the beauty and intricacy of nature. Hōitsu's career was marked by his dedication to preserving and revitalizing traditional Japanese art forms, making him a significant figure in the Rinpa school. His works are celebrated for their delicate and detailed depictions of natural scenes, reflecting his deep appreciation for classical Japanese aesthetics.
