Jakob Smits (1855-1928) was a Dutch-Flemish painter born in Rotterdam. He studied at the academy in Rotterdam and helped his father in the decoration business. Smits moved to Achterbos (Mol) in 1888 and became a Belgian citizen in 1902. He was a knight in the Order of Leopold (1903), Officer in the Order of the Crown (1919), and Commander in the Order of the Crown (1927).
